In a world of computers, Lasers and A.I. isn't it a comfort to know that somewhere, someone is still making real art by hand.........And congratulations, you found one of them right here!
Before I could write, I could pick up a pencil and draw. With the help of my dear Father who was himself a brilliant artist, I practiced and grew better as I grew up. By the time I was at high school I was heavily into music and motorcycles and most of my artwork was sketches and paintings of my favourite album covers and Harley - Davidson motorcycles. Then my Mother bought me my very first Glass Engraver in the hope that she'd have a house full of beautiful works of art. It didn't quite work out that way becuase I was still in Harley - Davidson mode!
Evevntually I landed the job as Glass Engraver for the prestigious Caithness Glass company. There, I was able to work on some truly wonderful pieces including the famous 'Children in Need' bowls that were auctioned off on the radio. One of those pieces raised £5000 for the great cause. Along with many wonderful memories of Caithness is my most favourite one, Getting my hero Keith Emerson (Emerson, Lake & Palmer) involved with one of the charity pieces which led to us meeting and staying friends. But all things come to an end and I left Caithness to engrave glass under my own name.
Eventually after some persuasion I changed from Glass to skin and opened up my own tattoo studio which I ran for several years. It was at that time that I wanted a custom paint job on my own Harley - Davidson. I read some books, watched some videos and bought two starter kits and set about practicing. My first 'proper' airbrush job was Emerson, Lake & Palmers classic artwork from their album 'Brain Salad Surgery'. I did this on my Harley and won an award for it. Since then I have painted several show winners as well as several smaller fun bits.
Now I do everything under one banner. I still hand engrave glass. I still Airbrush, I also do oil and acrylic illustrations and I am currently working on a new range of Greetings cards which will be for sale hopefully later this year.
You can see examples of all of this work right here in the pages of this website and on my facebook page. Rick Stephenson art.
